Assumptions & Risks

Assumption: Serverless queries will successfully offload exploratory/ad-hoc workloads from dedicated pools, enabling scale-down.
Risk: Serverless SQL pools charge per TB processed. Unoptimized queries or lack of partitions can scan massive data and quickly erode savings. Implement cost-control limits.
Action: Use auto-pause for non-prod environments over the weekend. Set up alert thresholds on serverless spend. Do not commit to 1-3 year reserved capacity until you have right-sized the instances.

Why Synapse Optimization Matters

Many data warehouse deployments are oversized for their 95th percentile workload. By moving exploratory analysis to Serverless SQL pools and enforcing strict pause/resume schedules for lower environments, organizations routinely cut their Synapse compute bill in half.

Recommendation: Right-size your compute tiers before purchasing 1-year or 3-year Reserved Capacity. Committing to an oversized DW2000c pool locks in unnecessary spend.
